GREENVILLE - Forgive the J.H. Rose football team if its focus wasn't solely on Tuesday's scrimmage against East Wake. Some of the players' thoughts no doubt wandered to a teammate who wasn't there. Rose hosted a scrimmage against East Wake and both teams produced good stretches of play on both sides of the ball. But the first thing Rampants coach Todd Lipe wanted to do following the two-hour session was hold a postgame prayer for junior defensive end Garrett Ball.
Ball was in critical condition at Pitt County Memorial Hospital Tuesday night two days after falling off a water slide and suffering a head injury during a team pool party at Gold's Gym. Lipe visited Ball Monday night and said he left PCMH encouraged.
“He looked good to me. His mom didn't think he looked real good but he looked pretty good to me,” Lipe said after the scrimmage. “The report I got was that he opened his eyes last night. Things look real positive right now. He's not out of the woods, but he looks like he's going to come through it and hopefully in a couple of weeks, he's going to be back to normal.”
